Joanna Shields is Vice President and Managing Director of Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Facebook where her primary focus is elevating Facebook as the world's most valuable marketing and communications platform for global advertisers and brands. For the past decade, Joanna has been a driving force in the European Internet landscape. Since moving to the UK in 2000 to run Real Networks International, she has held key positions at leading companies such as Google, where she served as Managing Director of Syndication and Partnerships for Europe, Middle East and Africa and Chief Executive of Bebo where she built the company from a start up into one of Europe’s leading social networks and spearheaded its successful acquisition by AOL, Time Warner for $850M in March 2008. After the acquisition she served as President of AOL’s social and communications division running AIM and ICQ product development and global operations.
Her career started in 1987 in Silicon Valley and for more than last two decades, her focus has been on creating, managing and scaling international technology businesses, maximizing shareholder value and leading start up companies to successful exits. During her career she also served as CEO of Veon (acquired by Philips Electronics in 1999) and VP of Global Sales for Electronics for Imaging (EFI). A strong believer in the connection between social networking and social impact, Shields serves as a Trustee of Save the Children, UK and has recently started the non-profit, KidsCode.org to promote digital knowledge and global impact for young people.
